    Walter Firman Burcher of St Paul Bedford, manager of the irrigation farm of the Sanitary Authority of Bedford – about the middle of April he took a coat into the office at the farm and left it there. He last saw it in the office on 28 April. He missed it on 4 May. A pair of gloves was with the coat. Denton worked for him at the farm for several months. Denton left on the Friday a week before he missed the coat. The coat, gloves and straps produced are his. He had not missed the straps. John Church, police constable of Bedford – he apprehended Denton on 7th. Denton said he could not charge him with stealing Mr Butcher’s coat. He received the pair of gloves from Denton’s wife the same day. He saw Denton searched and saw one of the straps produced taken from him. Thomas Rolls of St. Cuthbert, Bedford, pawnbroker – he carries on his business in Queens Head Lane, St Pauls Bedford. On May 2nd Denton offered a coat. He gave the name George Denton and said the coat was his. He took the coat in pledge and gave it up to Supt Kennedy. Abraham Kennedy, police superintendent – on 7th May he received the gloves from PC Church. The prisoner gave him the name Alfred Denton Alfred Denton – he had too much to drink and was coming by the irrigation farm and went in to lay down. The office door stood open. He does not remember leaving. The next morning he found himself at home by the fire with a jacket over his shoulders. He was too far gone in drink to know what he was doing.
