  • Scope and Content
Jonathan Osborn: lived with his father at Tebworth in Chalgrave and helped in his father’s butchering business. They kept between 30 and 40 fowls on the premises and missed one of the fowls which was very like the one produced. He believed it to be his father’s property. He knew the fowl to have been safe on the premises on 1 March. They had several fowls like the other produced and he could not say if this was a missing fowl. On 4 March he found the gate leading to the yard unpinned and a hurdle in the yard untied. There were footmarks on the gate. He knew the gate had been shut the night before. He found the sack produced hanging on the fence in the yard on the 4 March. Matthew Bailey: a higgler of Wingfield in Chalgrave. The sack produced was his and had been taken from his place on 3 March. The coat and other sack were also his and had been taken at the same time. George Hull: a police constable stationed at Woburn Sands. On 4 March he was summoned to Weston’s lodging in Woburn Sands. At the lodgings he found some ducks and hens. The prisoner had a coat on. On 6 March he returned to Weston’s lodgings and found a bag. He also received sacks from Osborn of Tebworth and Bailey. Statement of the accused: nothing.
