Scope and Content
The school disagreed with the Local Education Authority’s (LEA) policy of allocating children places at Upper Schools depending on which catchment area they lived in, the school Governors wishing to give children from any part of the Dunstable/Houghton Regis area the chance of attending the school. After negotiations the LEA and Governors could not agree on a policy and the matter was referred to the Department of Education and Science who decided that the Governors could not be forced to agree to LEA proposals. The eventual policy was as follows, with children being admitted in the following order of precedence:
(a) first priority to be given to children with present or past sibling connection or on denominational (Church of England) grounds, up to a quarter of the 250 intake in any one year;
(b) children within the catchment area;
(c)(i) admission on medical grounds;
(ii) sibling connection (these over and above the quarter of intake referred to in (a)),
(iii) denominational grounds (these over and above the quarter of intake referred to in (a);
(iv) children residing in Bedfordshire (drawn by lot);
(v) children residing outside Bedfordshire (drawn by lot).
