    Abraham Copland of Kimbolton (Hunts), merchant – on 18 December he left a scarf on his gig at Oakley about 4pm and went into Mr Mackay’s house. When he came out his scarf was gone. He was in the house about 10 minutes. The scarf produced is the scarf he missed. George Frederick Lazenby of Borough of Bedford, pawnbroker – he lives at 19 Offa Street. Waite came to his shop on 19 December and offered a shawl in pledge. From information previously received he said the shawl had been stolen. Waite said “if the shawl has been stopped I will stop with it”. Waite claimed he had bought the shawl from a labouring man for 3s 6d and that he bought the scarf near a park. John Spencer, police constable of Borough of Bedford – on 18 December Mr Copland gave him the pattern of the shawl produced. He sent to Mr Lazenby who produced the shawl he now produces. He saw Waite and asked where he got the shawl from. Waite said he bought it. He said he must detain Waite while he made inquiries. As they were going down Harpur Street he asked Waite who he bought the shawl from. Waite said it was from a man going through Stevington Park. Abraham Kennedy, police superintendent of Borough of Bedford – on Friday 19th he went to the Borough Police Station and received the scarf from PC Spencer. He charged Waite with stealing it at Oakley on 18th. Waite said he was coming through Stevington Park between 6.15 and 6.30pm and met a man who said he had found a shawl and offered to sell it to him for 4s. Waite said he offered 3s 6d. Waite said the only description he could give of the man was that he had a velveteen coat and had a basket on his shoulder. Isaac Waite – as he was coming from Stevington he met a men in Stevington Park who asked if he wanted to buy a shawl. He asked to look at it, felt the weight and offered 3s 6d. The man agreed and he bought the shawl.
