Alfred Henry Mutlow: Superintendent of the British Workman's Insurance Company. On 31 August about 8pm he was on the Great Northern Railway platform at Sandy. The platform was crowded and he felt the prisoner push against his watch pocket and he heard something snap. He looked down and the guard of the chain fell out of his pocket. He saw the prisoner take his hand away with the watch in it. He took hold of the prisoner and charged him. As he was doing so someone behind tried to trip him up. Eliza Sergeant: was at the Great Northern railway Station at Sandy on 31 August and saw the prisoner near Mr Mutlow, with his hand near his vest. She saw the loose chain hanging but no watch. She then saw Mutlow take hold of the prisoner. Charles Busby: a police constable stationed at Clifton. On 31 August he received the prisoner into custody charged with stealing a watch. When charged with the offence he said “all right”. He was searched and the watch and chain found, as well as other items and a return ticket to Aldergate in London. Statement of the accused: he would like it settled.
