- Scope and ContentCharles Rudd: keeper of the beerhouse at Carlton and he also took in lodgers. On 17 August the prisoner came to the house and asked for bed. When Rudd went to bed, he had in his room on some drawers, a cash box containing gold, silver and coopers. He missed the box the next morning. The informed the police. The box was returned to him by Inspector Mardlin, having been broken open. Samuel Wooding: on 18 August he went in pursuit of the prisoner who he traced through Turvey and Brayfield towards Lavendon. He overtook him in Brayfield parish. He charged the prisoner with stealing some money and the prisoner gave him a quantity of gold, silver and coopers. He did not have the opportunity to count it and on his return met PC Mardlin and gave up the money to him. He gave up all the money except a penny which he later gave to Rudd. The prisoner confessed to him that he had taken the money from the lodging house. George Mardlin: on 18 August he received notice of the theft and went out with his son in pursuit of the prisoner. They went to Brayfield, where they got a horse and cart and caught up with the prisoner and Wooding near Lavendon. Wooding gave him the money and he took the prisoner into custody. The prisoner said it was the money which he had taken from the cash box and he was sorry for what he had done. He took the prisoner to the police station and counted the money in his presence. It totalled £55 13s 8d. The prisoner said he was John Nail of Edinburgh and confessed to seeing the money in Rudd’s room and it being a great temptation. The prisoner said he had thrown away the cash box. Frederick Henry Mardlin: on 18 August he had been with George Mardlin and the prisoner at the station in Turvey. The prisoner said he had thrown the cash box in a field near the church in Carlton. They went to the field and found it. It appeared to have been broken open with a stone. Statement of the accused: guilty.
