Statement of William Coles: on 8 March, John Freeman came to him at work and asked whether he could sell sugar anywhere. He said no, and asked where it came from. Freeman said it was bankrupt stock and he would give him half a crown for every bag he sold. Coles agreed and they both went to get a pony and cart and drove to the public house at the bottom of Princes Street. He remained there until Freeman got him a sample of the sugar and he took that to James Custance in Chapel Street. Custance bought 2 bags. Freeman gave him 5 shillings for selling it. He later met Freeman and Munn at the Prince of Wales and saw Freeman give Munn some money. Statement of John Freeman: Coles came to his father’s house on 7 March and asked for his father. He gave him a shilling. They met at the Greyhound and went to Pateman to get a pony and trap. Coles told him to go to the sugar warehouse of Mr Pike and see if anyone was about. Coles took the pony and cart into Stuart Place at the back of the warehouse. Freeman took Munn and the boy to the public house and stood them some beer. When he came out Coles had gone.
