- Scope and ContentRemoval Order. [22 October 1843] Certificate of Chargeability - Christopher Hawkes chargeable to St Paul from 23rd September 1843. Examination of Robert Wootton, Overseer of St Paul stating that Christopher Hawkes had become chargeable. Examination of Samuel Wing, Clerk to the Guardians of the Bedford Union - produces above dcuments. Examination of Christopher Hawkes: I am about 69 years of age. A little before Old May Day in the year 1817 I hired from Mr William Desborough of the parish of Thurleigh in the County of Bedford, farmer, for the term of one year to commence from Old may Day then next ensuing at the rent or sum of £20 a year a tenement consisting of a separate and distinct dwelling house and about 11 acres of pasture land situate in the said parish of Thurleigh. I held the said dwelling house and occupied the said land from Old May Day 1817 to Old May Day 1818 being the space of one whole year and I actually paid the full rent of £20 for the same and during my said tenancy I dwelt and inhabited the said Parish of Thurleigh for the space of forty days and upwards viz all the year. After the expiration of that year's tenancy I continued to hold the said dwelling house and occupyt the land without any fresh hiring from Mr Desborough from Old May Day 1818 until Old Michaelmas Day 1822 at the yeraly rent of £20 and I actually paid for the first and suubsequent year of my said tenancy to Mr Desborough. During the whole period of such tenancy dwelt and inhabited in the said parish of Thurleigh and my dwelling house remained separate and distinct all the time. I am the person mentioned in the Certificate of Chargeability.
