    Ann Rook: a domestic servant in the employment of William Thompsons who kept the Two Brewers public house in Biggleswade. On 9 March, the prisoner, calling himself Squires, came to the house and said he had some stuff at the Railway Station and needed 15 pence to pay for a carriage. He said he had money in the post office but could not get it, and would pay the money back in the afternoon. He asked her to asked Mr Thompson for the money and so she went upstairs and asked him. Thompsons shouted down asking if he was Larry Squires, the bricklayer’s son. The prisoner replied he was and Thompsons gave her the money to give to him. William Thompson: keeper of the Two Brewers public house in Biggleswade. On 9 March his servant Ann Rook went to his room and from what she said, he called to a man downstairs. He asked if the man was Larry Squires, the bricklayer’s son. The man downstairs replied he was and he sent 15 pence down to him. Later the same day at the Catherine Wheel public house, he saw the prisoner and asked if he had been the man that had called at is house that morning. The man said no, he did not know him or the Two Brewers. He followed the man into the house and the man said that if he would let him out, he would go and fetch the money, although he said he was to the man who had taken it. Frederick Smith: Inspector of Police at Biggleswade and he apprehended James Squires on 9 March and charged him. The prisoner made no reply to the charge at the time but on the way to the station said he had not been in Thompson’s house that day. Statement of the accused: he had not intended taking it but had meant to pay it back.
