    NOW i) conveys to ii) - two watermills called Alton Mill otherwise Awton mille with all the houses etc. belonging in the parishes of Shitlington and Hitchin in Beds. and Herts - several pieces of arable land, and leyes, meadow and pasture (12 acres) in Shitlington, i.e. meadow adjoining the mill (å acre); meadow (6 acres) by the stream belonging to the said mill; arable land (2 acres) in Alton otherwise Awton field in Shitlington adjoining the meadow last mentioned; meadow in Shitlington called Bakers meade (3 acres) lying near the stream of the said mill; and osier grounds and banks invironed with the said streams belonging to the said mill (å acre); all in the tenure of Samuel Knott To have premises in as ample manner as John Knott late of Ickleford, yeoman, deceased, in his lifetime by virtue of lease made to the said John Knott 1 January 43 Elizabeth I [1601] made between Thomas Ancell of Ickleford, yeoman, deceased, grandfather of ii) of one part, and said John Knott of the other part; and in same manner as Samuel Knott, son of the said John Knott, now occupier of the said premises since the decease of the said John Knott; all rights of Edward Ancell, his heirs and assigns, and Susanna his wife, in the property being granted Witnesses: Ro. Papworth, Charles Rayner, Edward Hurst, Edward Ancell Signature: Edward Anncell NOTE: The above deed was a "stray" among a bundle of deeds relating to Hertfordshire properties purchased by Mr. Camp from Paper Heritage, "Specialists in all Paper and Vellum Antiques", of Tree Shadow, Berrow Green, near Martley, Worcestershire. The deeds were mentioned in Family Tree Magazine Vol.1 no.2 (Jan.- Feb. 1985) p.4. The vendors may have had other deeds to the mill, as one dated 24 June 1725 between James Whittingstall of Shillington, miller, and John Ireland of Hitchin is mentioned in their catalogue dated Dec. 1984 (see CRT 115/63).
