  • Scope and Content
Certificate stating that Ann Clare, widow, is chargeable to the parish of St Paul and in the Bedford Union Workhouse.8th October 1842. Examination of Ann Clare, widow: I am the widow of Beaumont Clare to whom I was lawfully married at the parish church of Kempston two and forty years ago last June or July , my maiden name was Ann Ingram. We continued to live at Kempston I think as much as three years after our marriage. When my husband became ill and we were relieved by the parish officers of Kempston - when he got better and was able to go I remember Mr Douglas who was then Overseer of Kempston coming to our house with Mr Cox the carrier and desiring my husband to go with Mr Cox in his cart to the Ampthill Petty Sessions to be sworn to his habitation. My husband went with Mr Cox accordingly. Mr Douglas and Mr Cox are both dead. On the Saturday following I and my husband and one child were passed home by an order from the [arish of Kempston to the parish of St John in this town. I saw the Order. Cox conveyed him in his cart from Kempston to the saracen's Head in St John then kept by John Barnes one of the overseers of that parish. I think Mr Douglas met us at Saracen's Head but I am not sure. I know of my own knowledge that my husband myself and child with teh order of removal were delivered over to Mr Barnes. We were received and provided for by the parish officers of St John. The parish officers of St John gave us some money and we returned to Kempston the same night but the parish officers of St John relieved us whilst resided in the parish of Kempston for about a week afterwards when myhusband got better and went to work again. My husband died and was buried in St paul, Bedford about Christmas 1839. There is a charity called the Wellborn Charity which was distributed yearly by the Minister and Parish Officers of St Johns to those who belonged to that parish wherever they might be residents and after our removal and whilst residing in other parishes my husband partook of that charity of twenty years. I am now actually chargeable to the parish of St Paul. I was 63 the 4th December 1841. Statement of Samuel Wing, Clerk to the Board of Guardians of the Bedford Union verifying the above. Second copy of removal order.
