  • Scope and Content
Examination of Mary Ann Smith: I am the widow of John Smith, deceased. My husband died in the month of February 1836. I was married to him in the parish church of Little Thurlow in the County of Suffolk about 28 years ago. My maiden name was Mary Ann Webb. I have issue by him eight children - Charles aged 25, John aged 24, Samuel aged 22, Mary aged 18, Caroline aged 16 years, Isaac aged 13, George aged 11 and Eliza aged 9. The last three are now with me as part of my family . Since my husband's decease I have had two bastard children born in the parish of Clapham in the County of Bedford at the house of James Denton - Thomas born in April 1837 and James born in July 1839. My husband was a settled inhabitant of Great Thurlow in the County of Suffolk by birth & parentage and his settlement has been frequently acknowledged by the Parish Officers of that parish. About 20 years ago my husband and I came to live at Clapham where he continued until his death. About 12 months before his decease he was taken ill at Clapham and we applied to the Overseers of Great Thurlow for relief. They relieved us whilst residing in the parish of Clapham until his death. After my husbands death I remained at Clapham with my family and was allowed relief by the parish officers of Great Thurlow to the amount of five shillings [er week which was afterwards reduced to four shillings and that relief was continued until the birth of my first bastard child. About 5 years ago I went to Great Thurlow with my family to make a personal application to the parish officers for relief. The overseers received and provided for us by sending us to the workhouse of the Risbridge Union where we remained for three months at the charge of the parish of Great Thurlow. Before we left Mr William Snazill one of the Overseers of Great Thurlow gave me 20 shillings to help me back to Clapham. I have done no act to gain a settlement in my own right and am now actually chargeable to the parish of Clapham in the County of Bedford. Order suspended as Mary Ann Smith unable to travel due to sickness and infirmity.
