  • Scope and Content
Examination of Naomi Anderson (wife of William Arnott) the the said Naomi in the workhouse of the Bedford Union: I am now maintained in the workhouse of the Bedford Union at the charge of the parish of Great Barford in this County and am actually chargeable to that parish. My maiden name was Naomi Cross. I as married at the parish church of Glossop in the County of Derby on 29th March 1839 by the name of Naomi Cross to William Arnott who then went by the name of William Anderson. I did not then know him by any other name than William Anderson. We had been living at Glossop about a month before we married and he then went by the name of Anderson. I have no child by him. I had a bastard child born at the workhouse of the Bedford Union 16th February 1838. That child is a girl baptised Sarah Ann and is now with me for nurture. On 21st December 1840 I and my husband having become chargeable to the parish of Great Glen in Leicestershire were removed by the order of the Justices of the Leicestershire from Great Glen to Markfield in Leicestershire. My husband and an infant child since dead were included in the order. He was removed by the name of William Arnott and I as his wife. The overseer of Markfield took us to the Union Workhouse of Market Bosworth. My husband ran away after we had been in the workhouse forur days. I remained in the workhouse nine weeks. My child died in the workhouse. There was no appeal from the order of removal. My husband's sister fetched me out at the end of the nine weeks and then I heard his name was Arnott and not Anderson. We were married by banns. The child who died at Market Bosworth workhouse was buried at Markfield Churchyard at the expense of the parish of Markfield. After I left Market Bosworth workhouse I lived again with my husband. He left me about 13 or 14 weeks ago. I do not know where he is now.
