Scope and Content
Copy will of William Sale, citizen and skinner of London:
- his body to be interred in the vault in Mortlake [Surrey] churchyard with his late wife;
- bequeathing £5 to the poor of Bledlow [Buckinghamshire];
- bequeathing £5 to the poor of Mortlake;
- devising his property in Newgate Street, Christ Church [City of London] held by lease from the Tallow Chandlers’ Company to his brother John of Arborfield [Berkshire], clerk, remainder to John’s son John;
- devising his Bedford property in the occupation of Edward Edwards to his nephew George Sale;
- bequeathing £500 to George Sale and also £1,000, part of a sum of £2,000 borrowed by Sir Marmaduke Gresham, baronet;
- bequeathing £500 to his nephew John Sale and also £500 of the £2,000 owed by Sir Marmaduke Gresham;
- bequeathing £100 to his Godson George, son of his nephew George Sale;
- bequeathing £50 each to the two sons of his nephew James Sale, deceased;
- bequeathing £400 to his niece Deborah Sale if she gave a release to his executors of all claims against the estate;
- bequeathing £250 to Elizabeth, widow of his brother Samuel;
- bequeathing £200 to his niece Jane, wife of William Hawes;
- bequeathing £250 to his sister Deborah;
- bequeathing £100 to Elizabeth, daughter of his brother John;
- bequeathing £100 to Mrs. Deborah Whitton;
- bequeathing £50 to Mrs. Jane Jones;
- bequeathing £50 to Mrs. Anne Edwards;
- bequeathing £4 per annum to his servant Hester Pinder for her life;
- bequeathing £10 each to John, Mary and Claire, children of his brother-in-law John Crompton, deceased;

- bequeathing £10 each to his nephew and niece John and Katherine Bates;
- bequeathing £50 to Christ’s Hospital, London;

- discharging all debts owed him by his brothers and nephews;
- appointing his brother John sole executor, devising and bequeathing the residue of his real and personal estate to him to be disbursed as the testator would tell him;
- if any nephew or niece disturbed his executor concerning their share of the testator’s estate their bequest was to be forfeit;
