  • Scope and Content
Examination of Mary Beeby, wife of Henry Beeby: My husband left me to go to America between 8 and 9 years ago, and I have never seen or heard of him since. I then lived at Battlebridge in the parish of St Pancras in London. Almost immediately after my husband left me the Overseers of St Pancras removed me from that parish by a Magistrates Order to the parish of Colmworth in Bedfordshire as the place of my husbands settlement. The Overseers of Colmworth put me into a towns house and allowed me five shillings and six pence a week for about another year. They then reduced my allowance to 3 shillings and [torn away] a week which I had for a year and a half or better. The Overseers then sent me by the canal to this County to get work. They paid my passage and gave me five shillings. I have one child with me called Robert aged 13 years. We are chargeable to Bradford. Second copy of removal order.
