- Scope and ContentWilliam James Bodger: a surgeon in practice in Leighton Buzzard. He kept fowls in a paddock at the end of his garden. He had from time to time lost fowls from there. He had lost about 36 in the last month. The prisoner brought some pigeons to his house on that day. He asked the prisoner if he had been offered any fowls and the prisoner denied it. William Janes: an ostler at the Greyhound in Leighton Buzzard. On 23 April he went with his brother and Hopkins to Bodger’s premises ad stole some fowls. They took them to Rogers house and sold them to him. No questions were asked by the prisoners as to where the fowls had come from. [cross examination] this was a week after they had sold him 8 fowls. He had seen Rogers several times since and talked of selling him fowls. He sometime saw Mrs Rogers too. He had taken fowls to Mrs Rogers and then brought hem back later because Mr Rogers wasn’t in. He told Rogers his brother had a pig and he was selling fowls to be able to buy a pig. Albert Hopkins: on 23 April he went with William and Ned Janes to Mr Bodger’s and stole 6 fowls. They sold these to Rogers for 11 shillings and sixpence. John Olden: a police sergeant stationed at Leighton Buzzard. On 13 May he apprehended William Janes on the charge of stealing the fowls from Mr Bodger. The same evening he saw Rogers and asked if he had bought the fowls from Janes. Rogers said he had often bought from him over the last year. Rogers said some of the fowls he had killed and some he had sent to London. He said that he had so many through his hands he did not know where they all went. Statement of the accused – Dick Rogers: not guilty
