Kate Newell: daughter of Adam Newell of Slip End, Luton. On 22 May, about 3pm she was on her way home from Luton. She passed the prisoner on Whitehill, and he overtook her just inside Stockwood Park. He told her there was a nest with eggs in and if she went with him, then he’d get her the eggs. They went together across the grass. The prisoner looked to see if anyone was about and pushed her down and pulled up her clothes. She tried to get away. Mrs Fensome of Pepperstock was coming along. She got away from him and ran to Mrs Fensome and told her what he had done. The prisoner was a stranger to her. Catherine Fensome: wife of Charles, labourer and living at Pepperstock. On 22 May she was crossing Stockwood Park on her way to Luton. Kate Newell came running from a dell hole near the Luton entrance. She appeared much exhausted as if she would faint. The man stayed in the dell hole. She instructed a man by the name of Holt to go to the man. She asked him what he had done to the child and he made no reply. Edward Holt: a dealer living in Park Road West in Luton. He was crossing Stockwood Park to go to Woodside. From what he was told by the other witnesses he went to the dell hole and saw the prisoner. He asked him what he was doing there and the prisoner replied “a job for myself”. The prisoner was doing his clothes up. He told the prisoner he had been upsetting a child and had to come out but the prisoner said “I shan’t”. He took the man to the child and she said what had happened. They asked his name and address and after some time, he told them “Arthur Farr” and that he worked for Mr Gathard. Charles Haines: he apprehended the prisoner and told him the charged. The prisoner replied “ I don’t know that I meddled with any girl. I went into a hole in the lawn to do a job for myself. A man came to me and asked me what I was doing. I said ‘What’s that to do with you’ and then man then hit me on the nose”. Statement of the accused – William Parkins: nothing to say
