Charles Herbert Goodhand was born in 1876, the eldest son of Joseph Goodhand, blacksmith of Flixborough, Lincolnshire. He worked with his father in Flixborough from c.1897 – 1902, then worked for Shipley Urban District Council c.1903. He then moved to Bedfordshire to work for Lady Lucas at Wrest Park and then to the Shuttleworth Estate at Old Warden.
