  • Scope and Content
Walter Hales: a prisoner under sentence. He knew the prisoner; he had worked for Mr Hewett and knew his premises well. The prisoner came to the warehouse at the later end of June or beginning of July. It was after he had left employment there. Moult asked what he had got about. He told him he didn’t think there was anything. The prisoner pointed to some pedal plait and said “let me have some of that”. Hales said no but he took 19 pieces of pedal and 69 score bunches of twist white plait ready bleached. He said he was going to take it to John Turner’s in High Town. Moult told him that once he had sold the plait, he would give him part of the money. He saw Moult later the same day and he said Turner had given him half a sovereign and would give Hales the difference when he saw him. He saw Turner and he gave him 2 shillings. (Cross examination) It was the only time Moult had come. Nobody knew how much of the pedal plait there was, it had not been booked. He first mentioned it after he was in custody to Mr Hewett. Charles Hollingsworth Hewett: the prisoner had at one time been in his employment, from about October 1878 to June 1879. He was well acquainted with the premises. He did not allow plait to be sold or taken from Castle Street. (Cross examination) he did not know what pedal there was left. He should have missed the 69 score of twist plait, in the ordinary course of business it would have been in his stock. Samuel Brace: Inspector of Police at Luton. He apprehended the prisoner on 20 October 1879. The prisoner said he had never had any plait from there and had not worked there at any time.
