    Settlement Examination of Thomas Barley, father of Robert Barley: Thomas Barley of Buckden, County of Huntingdon: He was born to the best of his belief at Buckden and is now about 50 years of age. He let himself to Mr John Walter of Buckden at Michaelmas 1804 for a year and remained in his service until Michaelmas 1805, his wages were four pounds which he received. At Huntingdon Statute held before Michaelmas 1805 he let himself to Mr Samuel Stratton a farmer at Abbots Ripton for a year from Michaelmas day for four pounds wages. He went to Mr Stratton on the day after Michaelmas 1805 and served the year complete until Michaelmas Day 1806 when he left his service. Previous to Michaelmas Day 1806 he let himself to Mr John Scarbro' of Buckden for a twelvemonth at 5 guineas wages. He went into his service on the day after Michaelmas 1806 and remained in it the year complete until Michaelmas Day 1807 and received his wages. He let himself to a different person from Michaelmas 1807 to Michaelmas 1810 but did not remain a year in any one service. Up to Michaelmas 1810 he was in the service of Mr Thomas G [Gascoigne?] of Highfield in the parish of Midloe. At the Statute held at St Neots previous to Michaelmas 1810 he went there to get a place. Mr Robert Horn, a farmer residing at Bolnhurst in Bedfordshire came up to him and asked him if he came there to let himself, he told him he did. After some conversation as to what he had been accustomed to, Mr Horn asked what wages he wanted , he told him fourteen pounds for the year from Michaelmas 1810 to Michaelmas 1811. Mr Horn agreed to give him these wages and gave him 2/6 earnest which concluded the bargain. Mr Horn then asked him what day he should come to him he told him on October 13th, he did go on that day and remained in that service until Michaelmas Day 1811 and received his wages. He married at Bolnhurst in September 1811 and on his service being completed he went to reside at Buckden where he has lived ever since. Robert Barley is his eldest son, he was born at Buckden, he married between 1 and 2 years ago, when he ceased to be a member of his family. he has not done anything to gain a settlement for himself. Some years ago when an accident happened to one of his sons, he was sent to the Infirmary at Bedford at the expense of the parish of Bolnhurst. On his being discharged from that Institution he received relief from Bolnhurst for him for a considerable time. He has also received relief from Bolnhurst himself. Examination of Robert Barley: Robert Barlety of Buckden, County of Huntingdon, labourer, son of Thomas Barley. He was born he believes in the parish of Buckden where his father and mother lived. He has never lived as a servant to any person for a year. About a year and a half ago he was married at the parish church of Buckden to Mary Shelford his present wife, by whom he has one child named Elizabeth aged one year and two months. He hath done no act whereby he might have gained a settlement elsewhere. He is now actually chargeable to to the parish of Buckden.
