Thomas Barcock: a shepherd to Mr Gell at Sharnbrook, who occupies a farm at Yielden. He saw 10 of Mr Gell’s pig safe on 15 August. The following day, he was told they were not on the premises and on 18 August, 6 of the pigs were brought back to the farm by Joseph Carter, the foreman and Edward lee, the police constable of Dean. On the 20 August the other 4 pigs were returned by the men. Joseph Carter: a foreman at Mr Gell’s farm at Yielden. On 16 August he missed 10 pigs from his master’s yard. He could not see where they had got out and concluded they could only have got out if someone had opened the gate. After making enquiries he heard 6 pigs, like those lost, had been sold at Thrapstone Market about 8 miles from Yielden. All the pigs were black spotted. On 18 August he heard the pigs were at Mr Colson’s at Raunds and he went over and identified them as his master’s pigs. Mr Colson said he had bought them from Samuel Knight at Thrapston Market. He heard the other 4 pigs were at Mr Spencer’s farm in Keystone. He went there with Constable Lee on 20 August and found 4 pigs which he knew to be his masters. Mr Spencer said he had found the pigs running about his fields on 17 August. Keystone lies between Yielden and Thrapston. Ekin Colson: he purchased 6 pigs, from Samuel Knight, at Thrapston market on 16 August. He sold them on to Joseph Hull of Duston, but he failed to pay for them so he took them back. On the Thursday, Joseph carter came and identified the pigs as the property of his master. Whilst he had been at Wellingborough, talking to Constable Lee, he saw the accused dealing with a man in the street. He pointed the prisoner out to the Constable and the prisoner immediately ran off. Edward James: an Inspector of the Wellingborough district of the Northamptonshire police. He had heard of the loss of the pigs and had received a description of the accused from Joseph Carter. He was told which way the prisoner had gone and followed him through a timber yard and aught sight of him running across some fields. James got a horse and took hi on the road towards Thrapston. Knight said he knew nothing of the pigs. On searching Knight, he found 8 pounds and 11 shillings.
