  • Scope and Content
The Leighton Buzzard Charity Society was formed on the 6th November 1940 with the aim of organising dances and other entertainments to raise funds for local charities in Leighton Buzzard and district. The Society incorporated the "Good Neighbours' Fund" which was used to help the needy, including servicemen and prisoners-of-war. At a committee meeting held on 21st October 1942 it was decided to merge the Charity Society and the Good Neighbours Fund to avoid duplication of work; henceforth the Society was called "Leighton Buzzard Good Neighbours". Leighton Buzzard, Linslade and Wing Local Forces Fund was formed on 4th June 1945 by the Excelsior and Buzzard Lodges of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes. Its joint committee was formed of representatives from Leighton Buzzard and Linslade Councils, Wing Parish Council, and Leighton Buzzard and Wing branches of the British Legion as well as members of the RAOB. In January 1951 the Fund was dissolved and its assets transferred to Leighton Buzzard Good Neighbours. The Linslade Memorial Playing Sports Association was a separate organisation formed on 28th June 1950 to "consider questions relating to the Garden of Remembrance in Mentmore Road", the proposed war memorial, and the playing fields scheme. It held its first meeting on 7th July 1950.
