  • Scope and Content
Yesterday about 1pm he left his shop to go to dinner and desired Burrows (who he had once before engaged in dressing a pig) to mind it during his absence. He returned in about 1/4 hour and foudn Burrows still in the shop. He asked if anyone had been in and Burrows said not. He found the lock had been wrenched open on the till. When he left the shop he had locked the till and put the key in his pocket. He is sure there were half crowns and other silver in the till. He lives opposite the shop and ran over to tell his housekeeper, but returned immediately and found Burrows had left the shop. He asked another little boy who works with him where Burrows was and was told he had gone into the privy in the back yard. Immediately Burrows came out he seized him and accused him of robbing him. He found nothing on Burrows person. He searched the privy and found 3 half crowns and 3 shillings secreted in a hole, covered up with cobwebs. Burrows still denied robbing him. He had left the shop occasionally that morning, but had left his housekeeper there to whom he gave the key of the till. He sent for the police who took Burrows into custody.
