  • Scope and Content
Robert Dimock of High Town, Luton, butcher - on Thursday morning about 6.45am Amos Everitt came to him and asked if he would buy "a wool one". He said he meant a sheep or lamb, whichever he pleased. He asked where Everitt would have it from. Everitt said from William Irons of Mangrove and that he could have 3, 4, 5 or 6, whichever he liked. He agreed to have one and asked to have it alive. After talking with Everitt he went to Mr Irons who said he would watch his sheep that night. Between 2 and 3am on Friday Everitt rapped at his window as agreed. He went with Everitt to Farmer's Knoll and found a sheep tied to a hedge in a wheatfield belonging to Mr Daniel Davis of Scourge End. Everitt wanted 25s for it. They brought the sheep down and tied it to Mr Goodjohn'sgate. Everitt left the sheep there and went into Magnus's house. He told Magnus all about it and sent him for a policeman. They waited until Magnus returned, who said all was right. They left the house and he pretended to fetch a barrow while Everitt went in the direction of the sheep. He saw no more of him. He afterwards went towards the sheep and found the policeman there. As Everitt did not come the policeman directed him to take the sheep to his house. He locked it in the slaughter house and directed his wife to let him know if Everitt came, which he did about 7am. The policeman came in and he identified Everitt as the person who took the sheep. The policeman took Everitt into custody. He kept the sheep until Mr Gutteridge's shepherd came and owned it. The policeman Millard came and said he wished to take it to Mangrove as Mr Irons had lost one, but when he saw it Mr Irons said it was not his. They took it to Mr Gutteridge's and the shepherd said he could swear to it. John Millard of Luton, police constable - the sheep now produced is the one he received from Robert Dimock.
