- Scope and ContentEdmund Sear: had a house in Toddington lately occupied by Mr Davy. The cast iron scraper stood at the back door. On 27 December he saw the scraper at the back door but on 1 January he received information the prisoner had the scraper in his possession. He had missed the scraper on 29 December. He advised the police constable. Joseph Baker: on 27 December the prisoner came to him and asked if he wanted to buy a scraper. He bought it for 10 pence. The prisoner said he had been at work for parties who had given him the scraper instead of money. He believed his story to be correct when he purchased it. John Thorogood: he received information of the loss of the scraper and went to see Joseph Baker who he had been advised had just purchased the scraper. Baker said he had bought the scraper for 10 pence from Thomas Evans. He took the scraper to Edmund Sear who identified it immediately. On being taken into custody the prisoner said that a man who was loading a wagon given it to him. On 27 December, Thorogood had seen the prisoner at the prosecutors house, which had been let to Mr Davy.Statement of the accused - Thomas Evans: the scarper was given to him. He took it to Mr Baker and sold it.
