- Scope and ContentHe is 40 years of age, was born in St Cuthbert, Bedford where his father then resided. His father belonged to St Paul, Bedford. He lived with his father in St Cuthbert until he attained the age of 13 years and a half, about Michaelmas 1787 when he was bound apprentice to Richard Farey of Biddenham, carpenter, for the term of seven years. He served under the apprenticeship about three quarters of a year when his master died. Examinant then lived with Mr Estwick of Biddenham until the Michaelmas following as a labourer. He then went to live with his father who resided in St Paul, Bedford until sometime in the Spring following (1789) when one Joshua Page of St Paul agreed to take him. The agreement was not in writing, nor was any term of service mentioned. Examinant's father was to board, lodge and clothe him. Examinant lived with his master Mr Page about two years when he proposed to leave him but his master offered to give him half his earnings if he would stay. Examinant accordingly lived with his master under the last agreement about a year and a half longer and during that time received half his earnings as agreed upon. In January 1793 he enlisted as a private into the Bedfordshire Militia. He has since served respectively in the 17th and 40th Regiments of Foot, intil July last when he obtained his discharge. He hath done no other act wherby to gain a settlement.
