  • Scope and Content
He is 32 years of age, was born at Dunton, where his father Henry was a parishioner. At the age or 14 years or thereabouts he was placed out apprentice by Indenture for seven years by his father to James Emery of Potton, shoemaker. A sum of ten pounds was paid by his father to his master and he is certain that the duty thereon was paid, but he has not the indenture. That he served half his apprenticeship with Mr Emery at Potton, then some differences arose between the master and this Examinant and he left his service without his masters leave. His master never made him return but offered to give up his Indenture to his father, but the father refused to take it but paid a weekly sum to his master not to seek after him til his time had expired. This Examinant soon after came to Bedford and entered into an agreement in writing with Thomas Humphreys of St Paul, shoemaker, to which John Emery was not privy and thereby undertook to work for him for two years for his board and lodging and washing, he was to earn for his master by his work a certain weekly sum and he was to be paid for overwork when he did any. He lived with him those two years in St Paul. He has not done any act whereby to gain a settlement to the best of his knowledge. He was married to his now wife Mary at St Peter, Bedford in April 1802 by whom he has five children namely Henry aged 11 years, John aged 8, Ann aged 6, Sarah aged 4 and George about 6 months.
