- Scope and ContentHe was born in the year 1782 in the parish of Bishop Wearmouth in the County of Durham. In the month of June 1795 he was placed out apprentice by his father to William Row of St Peters Quay in the township of Byker in the parish of All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, merchant, by Indenture for seven years. His master employed him some part of his time as a mariner and the latter part (in consequence of a fall) as a cooper. This Examinant received a wekly allowance from his master and boarded and lodged with his father Thomas Johnson of St Andrew, Newcastle Upon Tyne the whole of his apprenticeship. He has not his Indenture of apprenticeship. He has not done any other act whereby to gain a settlement in his own right to the best of his knowledge & belief. He was married on 3rd February 1808 to his present wife Mary Simmons at St Cuthbert, Bedford by whom he has four children all living namely Frances Mildred about 5 years of age, Mary Ann about four years of age, Eliza about two and George about 15 months old.
