Scope and Content
The 'Chapel in the Hirne' dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, was originally established near St Paul's Church as part of the endowment from Lincoln of the prebendaries Bedford Major and Bedford Minor. It was subsequently included in the lease of the Lincoln prebend lands in Bedford to Sir William Harpur and included in the endowment for the Grammar School. The chapel was used for the yearly Assizes until 1753 when the Shire Hall was built. It was then used as a brewery. In 1813 the chapel was bought by the Harpur Trust and demolished to enlarge the playground of the Grammar School.
