- Date free text12 November 1842
- Production dateFrom: 1842 To: 1843
- Scope and ContentThat morning about 9am James Dennis came to his shop in Potton and bought and paid for a leg of beef for 1s 6d. Dennis left it and said he would either send or come for it afterwards. He [Paine] went out and was gone about 10 mminutes. When he returned he found Dennis had been for his beef and he missed about 1 1/2 lbs of beef suet, value10d, which he had left lying near the leg of beef. He suspected Dennis had stolen it and followed him to a beershop where he charged him with the theft. He took the piece of suet out of Dennis's jacket pocket. He is sure the suet now produced is the piece he missed. He had just taken it out of a loin of beef and it had a red mark on one end. Dennis said he bought it along with the leg of beef. He gave Dennis into custody.
