- Scope and ContentRichard Lawrence of Luton, labourer - Samuel Day lives next door to him. On Wednesday 26 or Thursday 27 October he saw an iron pig trough in Day's barn which adjoins his. On Monday 31 October he saw Day and Hill carrying something heavy in a sack. He heard Hill say "come on". The prisoners were coming through a gate out of a field called 7 acres into the High Road. He followed them and they went the back way into the Two Brewers. He went into the Two Brewers and had a pint of beer. When he went in Thomas Hill was in the house and Day came in about 5 minutes later. Day asked if Jack was home - Mrs Hargrave said no. About 1 hour later he left and saw the pig trough in the passage. He called Mr Hargrave out and asked him who it belonged to - he said he knew nothing about it. Mr Hargrave called his wife and asked her - she said Sam Day brought it and offered it for sale for 10s. He went and gave information to Mr Blundell. Mary Hargraves of Luton - her husband is a publican and keeps the Two Brewers in Luton. On Monday 31 October Samuel Day came to their house and asked if she would buy an iron pig trough. Day said he had a good one, wanted money and would sell it cheap. She said he could bring it down in the evening and show it to her husband. Day brought the pig trough and said he wanted 10s for it. She told him to leave it at the back door and wait until her husband came home for an answer. Joseph Groom of Luton - he is servant to Joseph King Blundell. On Saturday 22 or Sunday 23 October he missed an iron pig trough from his master's yard. The pig trough produced is his master's property. He has been in the habit of feeding pigs in the same trough for some time. John Inwards of Luton, parish constable - on Monday 31 October between 8 and 9pm Mr Blundell sent for him. From what he was told by Mr Blundell he took the two prisoners into custody. He found the pig trough in Mr Hargraves house. When he brought Thomas Hill to the Two Brewers he said he knew nothing about the pig trough - he never said a word to him about the trough. Hill was the first person who mentioned it. Hill had not seen the trough in his presence.
