  • Admin/biog history
A preliminary meeting was held on the 4th December 1908 to discuss forming a society. This was followed by an afternoon and an evening public meeting. There was some disturbance outside the public meeting in the evening and until the prospective members knew whether they would be held liable for the damage they held off forming a full committee but did agree a chairman and a secretary. By the end of May 1909 they had agreed a treasurer and Miss Amy Walmsley became joint honorary secretary with Dr Ethel Stacy. The main aim of the society was to gain women's suffrage on the same terms as men. However they welcomed the 1918 Representation of the People Act and disbanded a month after it was passed in order to support the newly formed Women Citizen Association.
