  • Scope and Content
Describes meeting of Edward Mann Langley and Clara Maples, his cousin. Talks of the meaning of the word Tringle; of Edward Mann Langley giving up football; of Maples family home (Paull House, Hedon, near Hull); Maples’ career. Mr.Maples is said to have led a somewhat chequered life. Was a shipping agent, and had a connection called Pearson of the firm of Pearson and Langnese, shipping agents of Hull and Hamburg. Your great-grandfather Charles Dickinson Langley had two sons and three daughters. The eldest son was Charles – I think a commercial traveller. The second was Parkin,. whom I remember coming to Buckden. The eldest daughter was Sarah Dickenson Langley who came to Buckden several times. The next was Clara, then I think Annie your grandmother. In 1851 the family were living at Rochdale, but Clara the second girl was staying with her father and mother at Buckden. Parkin had some gifts in the artistic way. I have a well executed water colour miniature of Rochdale Church signed P.D. Langley 1853, and when he came to Buckden, he brought a photograph which he had coloured himself. Annie Maples (your grandmother) came several times to Buckden. She was somewhat of an invalid ., . . Do you know if your mother had a sister named Jenny ? and if so, whether Jenny was in London at the same time as your mother?
