- Scope and ContentSarah Gascoigne, spinster, was born in St. Mary’s, Bedford. In 1791 she was bound apprentice by Bedford Charity to Mary Gillman of South Molton Street, in the parish of St. George’s, Hanover Square, Middlesex, mantua maker, for five years. After eighteen months she was released, with consent of Bedford Charity, to Thomas Pitkin, Howland Street, St. Mary Le Bow, Middlesex, Clerk to Mr. Slater’s Glass House in Well Street nearby. Mary Pitkin, his wife, was also a mantua maker. After six months her employers moved to lodgings with Mr. Davis, 7 Whitehorse Street, Bow Road, Whitechapel, Taylor [Tailor]. In October 1794 she left her employers, who moved to Dover, and lodged in St. Paul’s, Bedford. She had always been employed as a household servant, not a mantua maker. Mr Pitkin she now believes is in the Isle of Wight.
