Born at Kettering, Northampton, where his father John lived under certificate from the parish of Winkley, Northants. On his father’s death, he was bound apprentice, but not by indentures on stamp to his father-in-law, John Bosworth, stonemason, who resided at Kettering under certificate from Thingden [Finedon] Northants. In June 1784 he was married at Kettering to Elizabeth. There were four children: Elizabeth born c.1785, Rebecca born c.1789, Sarah born February 1791 and Prudence, born c.1793. John served in the Northants Militia when in actual service.
