- Scope and ContentBorn at Maidstone, Kent, where his father William was a parishioner. In August 1790 he was bound apprentice for three years to William Brook of Maidstone, bricklayer. No premium was given but his master agreed to pay him 8/- per week. During this time he entered as a substitute in the West Kent regiment of Militia. When the regiment was embodied he joined the regiment. He served for about two and a half years. He was married on 6 January 1794 in St. Mary’s parish church to Elizabeth Bird.
