- Scope and ContentBorn in Bedford (Goldington) where his father Manaim was a parishioner. Apprenticed by Indenture on 22 February 1786 to Edward Broadfield of Elstow as carpenter for five years. After two and three-quarter years had disagreement with his master and paid him £6.10s to be released. Indentures presumed lost or destroyed. Two years before, he married Elizabeth and had one child, Elizabeth, who at time of examination was about nine months old. On 19 November 1792 he rented from William Gatey of Pavenham a house and premises in Bedford (St. Mary’s) called Cherry Tree, then occupied by his mother, Elizabeth Spencer, at a yearly rent of 12 guineas.
