- Scope and ContentJames Richardson: lived with his brother Robert at Houghton Regis and at the beginning of February he missed a nearly new bridle. The prisoner worked for his brother and was in the habit of sleeping the hay barn. The harness was hung there. Richardson went into the hay barn and found it out of place. He hung it up again but next morning it was missing. On 30 March, he saw the bridle on Mr Eames's mare and told his brother. He went with his brother to Mr Eames and spoke to Tompkins who worked for Mr Eames. Tompkins said his master had brought the bridle from Mr Fox. John Eames: Thomas Fox of Dunstable brought a bridle to him in the spring and he bought it from him for 4 shillings and sixpence. About 2 months later he heard that Mr Richardson claimed the bridle as his. George Tompkins: saw Thomas Fox bring a bridle to his master's stable. He had used it for about 2 months before it was claimed by Mr Richardson. Thomas Fox: a sadler of Dunstable. In the middle of February, the prisoner brought a bridle to his shop at Houghton. Fox said he did not want it; he returned about 10 minutes later and again the same evening and said he had it for sale. Fox made enquiries of the landlady and asked if she had known him steal anything. She said no. He bought the bridle from Sinfield for 2 shillings and kept it about a fortnight before selling it to Mr Eames. Cornelius Sharpe: took the prisoner into custody and the prisoner told him he would be glad when it was over. He said he had been drunk when he took the bridle and drunk when he had sold it to Fox. He said that he hoped Mr Richardson would not hurt him much.
