John Washington - he is landlord of the Star Public House at Chalton in Toddington. William Brandom and John Scrivener both lodge in his house. They are day labourers at Chalton. David Poulton also lodges at his house. Last Friday night Brandom occupied one room by himself and Scrivener and Poulton occupied another room together. On Saturday morning he, Brandom and Scivener all went out together to harvest work about 4am. He believes Poulton was then in bed. When going to bed at night Brandom and Scrivener both told him they had lost their clothes. Poulton was then gone away. On the Friday night he had seen the clothes now produced in the possession Brandom and Scrivener in their rooms. The cap, waistcoat, breeches and leggings Poulton is now wearing are those he wore when he lodged at his house. William Brandom - he is a labourer at Chalton and lodges at Washington's. The pair of trousers, the red waistcoat and silk handkerchief now produced are his. They were in his room on Saturday monring when he went out to work. He missed them when he went to bed at night. He did not see them again until he saw them in the possession of Joseph Abel that morning. He came through the room where Poulton slept on Saturday morning and he was in bed. John Scrivener - he is a labourer at Chalton. The round frock and the damson coloured waistcoat now produced are his. They were safe in his room when he went to work on Saturday morning. Poulton slept in the same bed with him and was in bed when he went out. Joseph Abel, constable of Houghton Regis - from information received on Sunday morning he went in pursuit of Poulton. Hornal accompanied him. After a search they caught Poulton at South Mimms. Poulton was wearing the trousers and handkerchief now produced. He was wearing one of the waistcoats now produced but he is not sure which one. He received the frock and the other waistcoat from Hornal. Samuel Hornal, police constable no.39 - he went in pursuit of Poulton yesterday. He inquired at a beer house called the Plough at South Mimms and was informed a person answering Poulton's description had lodged there the night before and had left a bundle. He examined the bundle, which contained the round frock and damson coloured waistcoat, and the clothing Poulton is now wearing. As he was coming out of the door he saw Poulton coming down the road towards the public house and took him into custody. He had on the trousers, red waistcoat and silk handkerchief now produced. Poulton said he thought they would be after him but did not expect them so soon. David Poulton - he has nothing more to say.
