    Benjamin Peck of Cardington, farmer - yesterday evening 17th July Abbott came to his house begging for lodgings and said he had just come from the hay country and was broke down. He give Abbott his supper and allowed him to lay in his chaff barn. From information received about 4.30am that morning he started in pursuit of Abbott. He overtook him about a mile and a half from his farm on the road to Bedford. Abbott was standing in a ditch with a fork belonging to him [Peck]. He told Abbott it was his fork and he would take him into custody. Abbott offered to give it up if he would release him and admitted taking it and said "I wouldn't have taken it for five pounds if I had only knew". It is the fork now produced by the constable of Cardington. It was marked with his initials B.P in 2 places which are now cut out. He can swear it is his fork. It was in the hay barn. Thomas Dynes of Cardington, constable - from information received he went up to Mr Peck's. Mr Peck and the prisoner were there. Peck gave Abbott into his custody. He took from him the fork and apron now produced. The form is in the same state in which it was when he took it from Abbott.
