  • Scope and Content
This letter was written from the house of John Samm (died in Northampton gaol - one of six friends who died of a fever - see Besse p.533) of Houghton Conquest, whose son married a daughter of William Dewsbury, the Quaker 'apostle to Bedfordshire'. The chief importance of the letter, however, are the references to John Bunyan. These show his pre-eminent position in his "society" as early as 1659; an important piece of evidence which has seldom, if ever, been realised. [From notes by Mr. H.G. Tibbutt: (1) John Crook and John Rush of Kempston. (2) "Needs" equals St. Neots. (3) John Crook's - Beckerings Park, near Ridgmont."
