- Scope and ContentThomas Chapman of Bierton (Bucks), lace dealer - on Wednesday 22nd June he was travelling with lace and stopped at James Peck's hosue at Streatley to sleep. He had some money in his purse including a half sovereign of the reign of George IV. Over the IIII is a mark apparently rubbed or filed off. He was in Richard Stokes's house at Limbury the same day and asked him to weigh it for him, which he did. He then wrapped the half sovereign in a piece of paper and put it in his purse. The next morning he missed the half sovereign. Brightman and another man slept in the same room as him. He told Peck and Mr Waller that if anyone offered them a half sovereign answering the description of the one he lost they were to retain it. The half sovereign now produced is the one he missed. John James - he is a police constable. When he took Brightman into custody Brightman told him he had found the half sovereign about 5 yards from Peck's door at Streatley.
