Bartlett Powers, one of the constables of Bedford - on 27th April, Bedford Fair day, he was sent for by the toll man to take charge of a cow of Mr Low's. When he got there Manton the tollman gave him charge of the cow. He stood there some time by the cow until they began to beat her and forced her away from him. They drove her through a hedge into the adjoining close and pushed him into the hedge. He did not see Crowsley at that time. The cow went over the next close into the road again where he met her. They again tried to drive her away from him into the next field. Crowsley came up to him then. Low came first and said he would give him [Powers] into custody for stopping the cow. Low collared him and he collared Low. Lamb came to assist him. He charged Crowsley to assist. Crowsley said he would break his head for him and then tried to pull him away from Low. As they were were coming down Crowsley kicked him on the leg. Crowsley tried before but did not succeed. Crowsley said he would kick him again and break his head if he did not let Low and shook his fist in his face several times. Thomas Coles of Bridewell yard in the parish of St Mary, Bedford - he was employed by Thomas Manton the tollman last Bedford April Fair day to assist him in taking tolls for the beasts. He asked Mr Low for the toll for three cows and he refused to pay. Manton then took one of the cows for the toll and gave it in charge to Powers the policeman. The cow stood there several minutes. They beat the cow and turned it through the hedge into the field in order to get it away from Mr Powers. It then jumped over the hedge into the London Road again. The crowd got fround it and got the beast away. Then Mr Low collared Powers. They were pushing and pulling one another about. He was in the midst of the crowd. he saw Thomas Corwsley lay hold of Mr Power's arm. Crowsley said if Powers did not let Low go he would knock his head off. He left the crowd and heard and saw no more. He did not see Crowsley kick Powers.
