- Scope and ContentBorn at Holy Trinity, Dorchester, where father John Austin was a parishioner. Bound apprentice about 1774 by Indenture to William Johns, Melcombe Regis, Dorset, joiner and cabinet maker, for a term of 7 years, for a fee of £20, but uncertain whether the King’s Duty was paid. Served Johns about 5 years there, when he left him without his consent. Worked as a journeyman for his own benefit for about 2 months, when he was pressed as a sailor [in the Royal Navy] and continued in the King’s service until the expiry of his apprenticeship. No other settlement. Was now a pensioner. Married Ann, spinster, at St. Marylebone, Middx., about 1789. One child: Mary, aged about 1 year but not Christened.
