  • Scope and Content
He did not unlock the wardrobe. All the things produced and the books came out of the wardrobe except one book which is his and the bottle of wine. He opened the wardrobe very easily and shut it again afterwards. He never turned the bolt at all. The breeches and gaiters he took out of his master's dressing room and the bottle of wine from the cellar. The wardrobe was locked on one side of the door and bolted at the bottom on the other. John Fowles was connected in this more than he was. He had all his master's boots out to clean for him about 2 or 3 weeks after he came. Fowles thought one pair would not be missed. Fowles took a pair of Wellington boots and kept them in the stable for about a month. Fowles was at that time working for Mr Livius. Fowles brought them back to the house and put them behind the same wardrobe and left them there until he thought he could get a customer for them so they might have the money between them. Fowles went down to the cellar with him and told him how the other servants used to get a bottle now and then. They took one bottle and drank it between them. That was before Christmas.
