  • Scope and Content
Charles Whitechurch of Harlton (Cambs), farmer - on Monday night 21 March he saw in his stable at Harlton an iron grey horse with a Roman nose, stout in the back, round in the carcase, coarse in the coat, clean in the leg, hair chafed off the sides by traces, about 15 hands, rather out of condition and 5 years old this spring. The horse was his property. It was usually turned into the yard adjoining the stable and he supposes it was that night. Yesterday morning 22 March his horsekeeper missed the horse and told him. He went to the yard and tried to trace the horse by its footsteps. He traced them along the highway leading from his house in the direction of Woburn. He came to Woburn Fair that morning and described the horse to Mr Turle the superintendent of police. He and Mr Turle went into the Fair and after searching some time Mr Turle found his horse. The prisoner is his nephew and has been living with his father at Royston. Robert Turle, superintendent of police stationed at Woburn - that morning he received information from Charles Whitechurch that he had a horse stolen. He searched for some time, then going up Leighton Street in Woburn he saw a horse answering the description standing in the Fair. The prisoner had the halter in his hand. He asked the prisoner the price of the horse and he said £15. He then took the halter out of the prisoner's hand. The prisoner went to the off side of the horse then ran away directly. Mr Whitechurch was close to the horse. He left the horse and pursued the prisoner. He charged someone he saw to pursue the prisoner which he did. He then returned and took charge of horse. Some time after the person he charged to follow the prisoner brought Edward Whitechurch back to him. Edward Whitechurch - had nothing to say.
