- Scope and ContentI am about 21 years of age, was born at Pavenham, the illegitimate child of Hannah Ward as I have been informed and believe to be true. I lived with my mother at Pavenham until her marriage about fourten or fifteen years ago to William Clarke of the Bell in Angel Street, victualler, and on her marriage I removed with her to his house at Bedford. I lived with him as a member of his family and worked for him as a journeyman in his trade of a butcher but without my living or wages until he gave his business up to me about three or four years ago. I carried on my trade at his shop in the Butcher Row. I paid the rent of six pounds six shillings for the shop to him. There is a dwelling house belonging to the shop, I continued to be with him as a member of his family until my own marriage. I was married on the 16th instant at St Paul, Bedford to Jane Kennings. About five weeks ago I hired a house at St Lloyds of Mr Thomas Clifton's wife's father whose name I do not know by the rent of ten pounds per annum payable quarterly with out deductions. The house is now under repair and I have not yet entered upon the actual occupation ut the rent is payable from the time I hired it. I have done no other act to gain a settlement.
