    I am about eight and twenty years of age, was born in Meppershall where my father held a farm, He is now living at Shefford. When I was 20 years of age I was placed out apprentice by my father to Mr Downing of Chicksands, gardener for the term of three years. I served my full term and then entered into the service of William Gambers of Sacomb Park near Ware in Hertfordshire as under gardener. I remained there two years, received my wages weekly and lived on the premises. After I left Mr Gambers I entered into the service of Frederick Polhill of Howbury Hall, Renhold as a gardener at the wages of thirty pounds a year. I lived in the house and remained there 15 months. I afterwards was out of employment six months when I let myself to Dr Brereton as a gardener at the wages of twenty pounds a year, in whose service I now am. I was married on 26th January instant at St Paul to Frances Wiles.
