- Scope and ContentSamuel Burman - on Friday they made about 4 bushels of soot and took it to Mr Fossey's farm. Mr Fossey gave him a shilling on account. He then went to Richard Powell's and spent 11d on victuals and with the other penny he bought a penny worth of tobacco. The tobacco was wrapped up in a piece of paper, but whether this was the same paper now produced or not he can't tell. He put the piece of paper down by the fire place. He went the next morning to sweep Mr Powell's chimney and thinks the paper might have got in among the soot. He left Mr Powell's on Friday night about 6 or 7 and went to Mr Fossey's farm and swept in the straw shed. Mr Fossey's man called him up in the morning about 3.30 or 4am. He went and got from near the Pest House at Dunstable 4 bushels of turf dust which lay on the ground. He mixed it with the soot he made on Friday and took it to Mr Fossey's farm about 5.30am. He went and swept Mr Powell's chimney and the next door neighbour's and took the soot to Mr Fossey's farm. He saw Mr Fossey about 8 or 8.30 am and told him he had made about 4 bushels os soot. he did not want him to know he had mixed the turf dust with the soot he made on Friday. John Taylor - on Saturday at about 4am he went to the Pest House from Kensworth and brought to Mr Fossey's abut 3 1/2 or 4 bushels of turf dust and mixed it with the soot they had made on Friday and the soot they made at Mr Powell's next door neighbour's.
