  • Scope and Content
I am fifty four years of age or thereabouts. I have only one child, a son John Arnold and he has gained a settlement in his owbn right at Warboys in the County of Huntingdon. he was put apprentice by the trustees of the Bedford Charity at their monthly meeting in December 1833 to Mr Stratton of Warboys, baker, whom he has served ever since. About three years and a half ago William Wadsworth of Pertenhall came to me and said he wanted someone to do for his mother Mary Wadsworth who is my Aunt and asked me if I would go. I said I had been once before and hardly knew what to do about it. He said he thought she would be better to me than she was before and said I should have my victuals and my lodging. I was then in the House of Industry, bedford and agreed to go. He took me with him to his mother at Pertenhall. She was not able to do anything for herself. I waited upon her and did all there was to do about the house, she found rent in board, washing and lodging. I remained with her upon these terms until Michaelmas last. About a fortnight or three weeks before last Michaelmas I asked Mr William Wadsworth leave to come to Bedford to see my son. He asked me who I should get to do for my Aunt whilst I was away. I said I had no regular pay and would not pay anyone to do for her ans asked Mrs Williams if she herself would not do for her as she had once before when I was absent. She would not and said they must look out for someone else and I might go for good and i then came away. My aunt gave me two half crowns at different times during my service and Mr William Wadsworth gave me four shillings when I came away. My aunt kept no other servant. Not signed or dated.
